Work that Room! athome, March/April 2020

In the March/April 2020 issue of at home magazine, Georgia Zikas of Georgia Zikas Design shares her approach to creating interior spaces that feel personal and meaningful. When she designs a room or an entire home, she begins with the people who will live there and what kind of life they lead. A colorful and richly lived life, she explains, informs the entire design and is what ultimately makes a room feel like home.

Georgia notes that even the finest furnishings or the most beautiful art can feel flatlined or disconnected if they do not reflect the personality of the person who lives in the space. The design becomes truly successful, she says, when it connects with the inhabitant and resonates with their lived experience.

In the example featured, a little girl’s room reflects her love of art and animals. The girl makes her own art, and Georgia’s design highlights and showcases those pieces, resulting in a room that is playfully collected and refined. The space is a direct expression of the child’s personality, illustrating how meaningful design begins with understanding the life and passions of those who live there.
